2 ingredients and 2 weeks of patience. That's all you need to make vanilla sugar at home using a leftover vanilla bean. A super versatile and delicious DIY baking ingredient.
Add the cup of sugar to a clean and sterilized lidded jar. Cut the used vanilla bean into 3 pieces and add it to the sugar, making sure it is fully dry.
1 cup granulated sugar, 1 vanilla bean
Add the lid and shake the jar for 30 seconds. Store it in a cool and dry place for 2 weeks, shaking it occasionally for the flavor to further infuse.
Notes
Ratio: I recommend 1 cup of sugar to 1 leftover bean with a wait time of 2 weeks minimum. If using a fresh bean you can up the sugar to 2 cups.Fresh vanilla bean: If using a fresh vanilla bean, scrape the seeds out of the beans first and add them alongside the used bean to the sugar.Swaps: You can also use brown sugar, coconut sugar, or powdered sugar and infuse those with a rich vanilla flavor.Storage: Stored in a dry and cool place, homemade vanilla sugar last for up to 2 years. Just make sure it's fully sealed and you shake it occasionally.
