I’m sure you have noticed that I’m into harissa right now. Similar to pesto, this butter bean hummus is packed with flavor and instantly seasons a variety of dishes – no tahini needed. I’m all for shortcuts when it comes to cooking from scratch, and homemade harissa paste is a great example of that.

Ingredients and substitutions

Ingredients laid out to make harissa hummus.
  • Butter beans – Drain the butter beans and reserve the liquid as it will be used to adjust the consistency of the hummus. You can obviously use chickpeas for a traditional hummus as well.
  • Harissa – I used homemade harissa paste but there are many high-quality store-bought options available. Just check the heat level before using. You can use other chili pastes including sambal oelek if needed.
  • Spices – Ground cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper add warmth and round out the flavors.
  • Lemon – Lemon juice adds freshness. You can use lime juice if needed.
  • Garlic – Fresh garlic is best, but you can substitute it with 1/2 tsp of garlic powder if needed.

My 3 top hummus tips

  1. Reserve liquid: Catch the liquid from the beans to be able to adjust the consistency as needed.
  2. Blend well: The longer you blend, the smoother and airier your hummus will become.
  3. Toppings: Go all out when it comes to toppings. You can add extra olive oil, A slice of lemon for visual appeal, and some chopped nuts such as almonds for extra texture.
