Freshly baked rolls are simply the best and these sweet Hawaiian rolls are perfect for your next dinner party as they’re yeast-free and come together with only 5 staple ingredients in 40 minutes flat.

A super versatile side for cooked meats such as my lamb steaks or lamb loin to mop up any juices, salads, soups, and stews. They also make great slider buns. Simply add pulled lamb or pulled chicken for an easy party snack.

Ingredients and substitutions

See the recipe card and notes section for full information on ingredients and quantities.

  1. Self-raising flour or all-purpose flour + 2 tsp of baking powder. Bread flour would work as well.
  2. Salt – don’t skip it!
  3. Pineapple juice – store-bought or fresh pineapple juice at room temperature.
  4. Butter – unsalted or salted but reduce the salt by 1/4 tsp at that point.
  5. Milk – whole milk is best but skim works too.

How to make yeast-free Hawaiian Dinner Rolls

See the recipe card for full information on the method.

Add wet to dry ingredients.

Knead for 2-3 minutes into a smooth dough.

Divide the dough into 16 equal portions (about 60g each).

Shape the dinner rolls.

Place them into a lined baking tin side by side.

Brush with extra milk before baking.

Recipe tips

  1. Storage: Once cooled, store the baked rolls in a kitchen towel or bread bin for up to 3 days. Reheat them briefly in the oven or microwave before serving.
  2. Toppings: Add poppy, pumpkin, sunflower, or sesame seeds for extra texture and flavor.
  3. Make ahead: For larger gatherings or add these rolls to your weekly meal-prep routine, simply freeze the rolls unbaked (already shaped) or baked for up to 3 months in a sealable freezer bag or container. You can also store the dough in an airtight container in the fridge overnight and bake the rolls the next day.
  4. Versatile side: Serve these Hawaiian sweet rolls as a side at your next dinner party, or use them as slider buns, or soft sandwich buns – perfect for lunchboxes! Also great with soups, stews, and salads.

Ingredients

  • 5 cups self-raising flour Note 1
  • 1 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup pineapple juice Note 2
  • 5 tbsp butter softened, Note 3
  • 1 cup milk more to brush, Note 4

Optional

  • 2 tbsp brown sugar Note 5

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350F (180 C) and line a 8×8-inch baking tin with parchment paper.
  • In the bowl of your stand mixer or a large mixing bowl, whisk the self-rising flour and salt.
    5 cups self-raising flour, 1 1/4 tsp salt, 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • Add the pineapple juice, softened butter, and milk, and use the dough hook attachment to knead the dough on low speed for 2-3 minutes until you have a smooth and elastic dough.
1/2 cup pineapple juice, 5 tbsp butter, 1 cup milk
  • Divide the dough into 16 portions to make small dinner bread rolls, or into 8 portions for large bread rolls.
  • To shape the dinner rolls, gently pull the outer edges up and towards the center of the dough and pinch them together. Cup your hand over the ball and move your hand in a small circular motion to create tension and nicely shaped dinner rolls.
  • Place the shaped rolls into the baking dish side by side. You want the edges to touch. Brush them with extra milk.
  • Bake the rolls for 30 minutes until fluffy and golden brown. Remove them from the oven, let them cool slightly, and serve while warm. Enjoy!

Notes

Note 1: You can substitute self-raising flour with all-purpose flour and 2 tsp of baking powder.
Note 2: Make sure the pineapple juice is at room temperature and doesn’t have any pulp.
Note 3: You can also use unsalted butter and add 1/4 tsp of salt instead.
Note 4: Whole milk works best but you can also use skim milk if needed.
Note 5: I prefer the subtle sweetness from the pineapple juice in the rolls but if you want to make them sweeter, simply add 2 tbsp of sugar alongside the dry ingredients to the dough.
Storage: You can store the Hawaiian bread rolls at room temperature for 3 days. Wrap them in a towel or store them in a bread box. Reheat and enjoy!
