Ingredients and substitutions

See the recipe card further down for full information on quantities.
- Puff Pastry: I use store-bought puff pastry sheets for convenience but you can make your own rough puff or puff pastry as well. You can use crescent roll dough or shortcrust pastry as a substitute for puff pastry.
- Apple: Fuji apples are ideal for their tartness, but you can also use Honeycrisp or Granny Smith apples.
- Sugar: Granulated sugar works best for this recipe but brown sugar or raw coconut sugar are good options too.
- Cinnamon: Ground cinnamon adds warmth and flavor.
- Milk: Whole milk or 2% milk works well for brushing the pastry.
Variations
Spiced apple: Add a pinch of nutmeg, cloves, or ginger to the apple filling for extra spice or simply use some of my homemade chai mix or Christmas spice mix.
Glazed croissants: Brush the cooled croissants with a simple glaze made with powdered sugar, cinnamon, and milk.
