Ingredients and substitutions

Ingredients laid out to make chai hot chocolate.
  1. Milk: I recommend full-fat milk but you can also use lighter versions such as skim milk. For a dairy-free alternative, you can opt for almond, oat, or coconut milk.
  2. Chocolate: Dark chocolate chips give the hot chocolate a rich taste but you can also use semi-sweet, milk chocolate, or even white chocolate. Broken-up chocolate bars work well too.
  3. Chai spices: I use 1/4 tsp of my homemade chai spice mix recipe but you can use store-bought chai spice as well. Increase the chai spice mix to 1/2 teaspoon for a more robust flavor. You can also use chai syrup, just keep the extra sugar content in mind.

Step-by-step: chocolate chip hot chocolate

1: You can add the spice mix and chocolate chips right at the start or once the milk is fully heated. Make sure to stir constantly if you add them at the start.

2: Stir to combine until the chocolate chips have melted. Adjust to taste, adding more milk or extra sugar. Serve while hot.

3 chai hot chocolate topping ideas

  1. Marshmallows: Add extra sweetness to your drink with fluffy marshmallows. For a fun twist, roast them over an open flame until they’re golden brown and slightly gooey.
  2. Whipped cream: A classic topping that adds a creamy and indulgent texture. Try my German schlag, brown sugar whipped cream, or mascarpone cream.
  3. Extra chocolate: Sprinkle a generous amount of chocolate shavings or drizzle chocolate syrup over your hot chocolate for a decadent and indulgent finish.
