Why you’ll love this chai hot chocolate recipe

  • Quick and easy: This dark chocolate chip hot chocolate can be whipped up with 3 ingredients in just 5 minutes, making it perfect for busy weeknights or lazy weekends.
  • Dark hot chocolate: The combination of dark chocolate chips and chai spices creates a rich and refined flavor instead of a milky and sweet hot chocolate.

Ingredients and substitutions

Ingredients laid out to make chai hot chocolate.
  • Milk: I recommend full-fat milk but you can also use lighter versions such as skim milk. For a dairy-free alternative, you can opt for almond, oat, or coconut milk.
  • Chocolate chips: Dark chocolate chips give the hot chocolate a rich taste but you can also use semi-sweet, milk chocolate, or even white chocolate. Broken-up chocolate bars work well too.
  • Chai spices: I use 1/4 tsp of my homemade chai spice mix recipe but you can use store-bought chai spice as well. Increase the chai spice mix to 1/2 teaspoon for a more robust flavor.

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

Variations

Sweeter: Add a teaspoon of maple syrup or honey to taste.

Salty: A pinch of sea salt adds another flavor dimension.

Chocolate chai toppings

Marshmallows: Add extra sweetness to your drink with fluffy marshmallows. For a fun twist, roast them over an open flame until they’re golden brown and slightly gooey.

Whipped cream: A classic topping that adds a creamy and indulgent texture. Try my German schlag, brown sugar whipped cream, or mascarpone cream.

Chocolate shavings: Sprinkle a generous amount of chocolate shavings over your hot chocolate for a decadent and indulgent finish.

Chocolate syrup: Drizzle a thin line of chocolate syrup over your hot chocolate for extra sweetness.

Candy cane pieces: Crumble up a candy cane and sprinkle it over your hot chocolate for a festive twist.
