Notes

How to use it: This recipe makes about 1 1/2 tablespoons of shawarma seasoning and you can use it to season 1 lb of chicken, beef, or lamb meat. Use it as a dry rub or mix it with 1/4 olive oil and 2 tbsp of fresh lemon juice to make a quick marinade. It works well for roasted vegetables too.
Storage: You can store this homemade spice blend in an airtight container such as a mason jar in a dark and cool place for up to 6 months.

Ingredients and substitutions

  • Cumin – Ground cumin adds warmth and depth to the spice mix.
  • Paprika – Sweet ground paprika works best in my view, I find smoked paprika too overpowering.
  • Garlic – Garlic powder or flakes both give the mix some savory notes.
  • Salt & Pepper – I like to use salt and freshly ground pepper to the spice mix for an all-in-one seasoning mix but you can omit those if you prefer to add them later on to a dish.
  • Coriander – Ground coriander offers slightly citrusy and more earthy flavors.
  • Turmeric – Ground turmeric adds a bright color and a slightly bitter taste.
  • Cinnamon & Cardamom – More warming flavors creating the distinct shawarma taste.

Shawarma seasoning works well with …

Lamb: Cumin, paprika, and warming spices work exceptionally well with lamb meat, making this shawarma spice mix an excellent seasoning for lamb kofta kebabs, lamb lollipops, or pulled lamb shoulder.

Chicken: A chicken shawarma kebab is a popular choice and this instant seasoning mix makes it so much easier to make it at home.

Beef: I love to add this Middle Eastern seasoning mix to ground beef dishes such as my shawarma meatball kabobs, or shawarma burgers.
