Harissa, like pesto or curry paste, is a versatile ingredient that instantly flavors a variety of dishes. It comes in many different spice levels and consistencies. Once you’ve found your preferred store-bought or homemade harissa paste, you can quickly and easily create a range of North African-inspired dishes.

5 minutes and 5 ingredients are all you need to make a batch of this quick and easy yogurt sauce with harissa. It’s incredibly versatile and a great way to add a high-protein, low-calorie topping to your meals. I use it for Turkish eggs, alongside fresh, grilled, or roasted vegetables such as potatoes, and in sandwiches or wraps such as my lamb meatball wrap.

It’s a must-make for your next BBQ. I goes well with grilled meats like chicken skewers and lamb sausages for example. It also makes a refreshing side for heavily spiced dishes such as tacos, tagines, and stews such as my lamb chili.

Notes

Spice it up: Add more harissa paste, hot sauce, or cayenne pepper for a hotter sauce.
Adjust consistency: Add whole milk or water to thin the sauce – 1 tbsp at a time.
Add herbs: Finely chopped fresh herbs such as mint, cilantro, or parsley can add a refreshing layer of flavor to the harissa yogurt sauce.
Storage: This spicy yogurt sauce lasts in the fridge up to 5 days in an airtight container – perfect for meal prep. I don’t recommend freezing the sauce.

Ingredients and substitutions

Ingredients laid out to make a harissa yogurt sauce.
  1. Yogurt – I use my homemade Instant Pot Greek yogurt but any Greek or plain yogurt will work. Choose a consistency that works for the dish you’re using the harissa yogurt sauce for. Avoid sweetened or flavored yogurts.
  2. Harissa – I follow my small-batch harissa paste recipe but a store-bought paste is totally fine to use. Harissa is a North African chili paste, known for its fiery heat and aromatic blend of spices. It’s used as a condiment, marinade, or flavor enhancer in various dishes from marinades, to sauces, and and varies in heat levels and consistency. Trader Joe’s harissa paste is a popular choice.
  3. Garlic – Fresh garlic is best but you can use 1/2 tsp of garlic powder instead.
  4. Lemon – Lemon juice adds some freshness to the sauce and balances the heat.
  5. Salt – Season to taste with sea salt or table salt.
