Why you’ll love my ground beef Alfredo recipe
I recently added this one to the “everyone eats it” and lazy dinner idea lists in our house. Here’s why:
- Quick & easy recipe: With simple ingredients, you can whip up this simple recipe in 30 minutes – perfect dinner for busy weeknights.
- One-pan dish: Meat, pasta sauce, veggies, and pasta in one dish. Easy clean-up. Dinner sorted!
- Tasty twist: If your family loves a creamy Alfredo sauce as much as beef in tomato sauce, this recipe will tick all boxes. It’s a twist on the classic chicken Alfredo, spaghetti bolognese, and beef stroganoff if you like.
Ingredients
- Beef: Lean ground beef works best. You can also use ground turkey or ground chicken as a leaner alternative.
- Cream: Heavy whipping cream works best but you can also use lighter alternatives. The cheese sauce will be thinner and less creamy.
- Cheese: Shredded parmesan cheese or pecorino work best but you can also use shredded mozzarella cheese or cheddar cheese.
- Pasta: I use penne but rigatoni or other small pasta shells work as well. You can also make it an egg noodle pasta dish.
- Vegetables: You’ll need 1 small head of broccoli, cut into small florets and 1 cup of frozen peas. See the variations below for more veggie ideas.
- Onion & garlic: 1 small onion, finely chopped, or 1 tsp of onion powder alternatively. You’ll also need 1 large minced garlic clove which you can substitute with 1 tsp of garlic puree or 1/4 tsp of garlic powder.
- Broth: Beef broth works best but you can also use vegetable stock or chicken stock if needed.
- Oil & butter: Extra-virgin olive oil or any other cooking oil can be used to sauté the onions. Salted or unsalted butter gives the dish extra richness and flavor.
Variations
- Veggie galore: Add more vegetables such as sliced bell pepper, mushrooms, green beans, or spinach for a higher veg-to-meat ratio.
- Spice it up: Add 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes for a kick of heat or 1 tsp Italian seasoning for extra flavor.
- Beef Alfredo bake: Add extra cheese on top of the dish and bake it in the oven at 350F for about 10 minutes until golden brown.
How to make one-pan Alfredo pasta
- Heat butter and oil in a pan.
- Sauté the chopped onion.
- Add ground beef, a pinch of salt, and minced garlic.
- Brown the beef.
- Deglaze with beef stock and water.
- Add pasta.
- Add vegetables halfway through cooking the pasta.
- Add grated parmesan cheese and cream. Season to taste.
FAQ
You can store the dish in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Slowly reheat the pasta dish on the stove or in the microwave. Add more stock to the homemade Alfredo sauce if it’s too dry.
I don’t recommend freezing leftovers of this dish as the texture of the creamy meat sauce and broccoli will change.

- 1 pinch salt
- 1 garlic clove large
- 2 cups beef broth
- 3/4 cup water
- 8 oz penne dried
- 1 1/2 cups broccoli florets
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup parmesan cheese shredded
- 1/4 pinch salt more if needed
- 1/8 tsp ground black pepper
- 1/4 cup parsley chopped
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add chopped onion. Cook for 2 minutes until lightly softened.1 tbsp olive oil, 2 tbsp butter, 1 small yellow onion
- Cook ground beef and minced garlic clove for 5-7 minutes until browned.1 lb ground beef, 1 garlic clove, 1 pinch salt
- Add the beef broth, water, and pasta. Bring everything to a rolling boil and cook until the pasta according to package instructions, about 10 minutes.2 cups beef broth, 8 oz penne, 3/4 cup water
- 5 minutes into boiling the pasta, add the broccoli florets and frozen peas. Bring the sauce back up to a low simmer and cook everything until the vegetables are tender and the pasta is al dente. Add more broth if needed (note 1 below).1 1/2 cups broccoli florets, 1 cup frozen peas
- On a low simmer, add the cream, followed by parmesan cheese. Stir until the cheese has fully melted and the sauce is creamy. Season to taste (note 2 below).1 cup heavy cream, 1 cup parmesan cheese, 1/4 pinch salt, 1/8 tsp ground black pepper
- Serve immediately with chopped parsley.1/4 cup parsley
Notes
- Adjust consistency: If the sauce gets too dry while you’re cooking the pasta, add more beef stock but you don’t want too much liquid or the sauce will be too runny. For a thicker sauce later on, add 2 tsp of cornflour mixed 1/4 cup of extra beef stock.
- Seasoning: Taste and adjust the seasoning of the sauce at the end as the broth and parmesan cheese can both add a lot of saltiness.
