Unlike my garlic-packed homemade tzatziki, this tangy yogurt sauce is a great side for spicy food such as grilled meats, tacos, curries, and chilis – my lamb curry and lamb chili are great examples. The fresh yogurt and lemon flavors can take on some heat and spice, making it a refreshing side for these rich, comforting meals.

I often meal prep a batch for fast lunches – think bowls, wraps, vegetables, and as an easy dip for bread and crackers.

Notes

This fresh yogurt sauce makes a great side for heavily spiced dishes such as grilled meats, curries, and chilis. The yogurt balances the heat and spices and adds some welcome freshness to heavy, comforting dishes.
Storage: This quick lemon yogurt sauce is perfect for meal prep as it stores well in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. I don’t recommend freezing it.

Ingredients and substitutions

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

  • Greek yogurt – Choose plain Greek yogurt or plain yogurt that’s on the liquid side for this sauce to avoid watering it down too much to achieve the desired consistency. You can easily adjust the consistency when making Greek yogurt in the Instant Pot by straining it less.
  • Lemon – Fresh lemon juice and lemon zest are best. Make sure to thoroughly wash the lemon before zesting it.
  • Olive oil – Extra-virgin olive oil adds some richness and flavor to the sauce but you can substitute it with extra water to make a lighter version.
  • Parsley – Fresh parsley works best but you can use dried if needed. Fresh chives or mint make great additions or substitutions for a simple yogurt sauce.
  • Seasoning – Salt and freshly ground black pepper is all you need. You can add some chili to add some heat if you like.
