Cottage Cheese Tzatziki

During summer I constantly have a batch of this high-protein Greek yogurt and cottage cheese tzatziki on hand. The Greek sauce is perfect as a fresh dip with fresh vegetables, a condiment with grilled meats, or as a versatile sauce for salads, bowls, and sandwiches. And thanks to the Greek yogurt and cottage cheese combination, it easily adds extra protein to your dishes!

Growing up in rural Germany, our small village was – or better still is – known for the Greek restaurant called Irodion. It was walking distance from our house and we naturally celebrated big milestones and birthdays there. Every time I make a batch of tzatziki it brings back memories of long dinners with loved ones. Maybe that’s why I make a batch almost every week during summer?

I substitute some of the yogurt with cottage cheese to get extra protein in and it may be just one of the favorite ways to enjoy this fresh cheese.

Notes

Note 1: To prevent the sauce from becoming too watery, drain the grated cucumber on paper towels before adding it to the mixture.
Note 2: Allow the flavors to meld by refrigerating the sauce for 30 minutes before serving.
Storage: Leftover sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. I don’t recommend freezing the tzatziki.

Ingredients and substitutions

  • Greek yogurt: Use store-bought or homemade Greek yogurt for a thick and creamy texture. You can also opt for regular yogurt or even cottage cheese to make cottage cheese tzatziki.
  • Cottage cheese: I use full-fat cottage cheese but you can also opt for a lighter version.
  • Cucumber: Grate the peeled cucumber finely for a smooth consistency. I use English cucumber.
  • Garlic: Fresh minced garlic adds a savory flavor to the sauce. Substitute with 1/4 tsp of garlic powder if needed.
  • Lemon: Lemon juice provides a freshness. You can add some zest as well.
  • Herbs: Fresh parsley or mint leaves add another layer of freshness and a herbaceous aroma.
