Why you’ll love this toasted milk latte recipe

  • Rich flavor: Toasted milk powder caramelizes the sugars, imparting a rich, nutty, slightly sweet flavor that complements espresso’s bitterness.
  • Creamy texture: Toasted powdered milk creates a thicker, creamier texture in your latte.
  • Save money – By making specialist coffee at home you’ll not only save money but can make it EXACTLY how you like it.

Ingredients and substitutions

  1. Toasted milk powder – You can toast whole milk powder easily in a pan or oven.
  2. Espresso – Freshly brewed espresso made with a coffee machine or Moka Pot is best but you can also make a strong filter coffee or use instant coffee if needed.
  3. Milk – I use whole milk for a rich flavor and creamy texture but you can also opt for skim milk as a lighter alternative. Plant-based options can be used as well.
  4. Vanilla (optional) – I like to add vanilla syrup for some sweetness and extra flavor but that’s optional.

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

Variations

Honey and spice: Add a drizzle of honey and a sprinkle of cinnamon or chai spice mix to add a cozy and comforting flavor.

Instructions

  • If you're using an espresso machine, grind your beans to a fine grind and brew according to the manufacturer's instructions. I make the espresso in my Moka pot by filling it with water and ground coffee, then heating it on the stovetop until the espresso is extracted.
    1 espresso
  • Meanwhile, heat the milk in a small saucepan or microwave for it to be between 150°F and 160°F (65°C and 70°C). Be careful for the milk not to boil over. Add the toasted milk powder and stir to combine.
3/4 cup whole milk, 2 tbsp toasted milk powder
  • Froth the milk with a handheld frother or by using an all-in-one milk frother.
  • Add the frothed milk to a large cup or mug, holding back the foam with a large spoon. Add the espresso and vanilla syrup (if using) and top the drink with the milk foam using the spoon.
    2 tsp vanilla syrup

Notes

Milk: The type of milk you use will affect the taste and texture of your latte. Whole milk is creamier, while skim milk is lighter. Plant-based work as well.
Foam quality: The quality of the foam is important for a good latte. If you’re struggling to create foam, try using a milk frother or whisk vigorously. Let it sit for a few seconds for the foam to set.
