Why you’ll love this blender condensed milk recipe

  • Quick and easy: No more simmering pots for hours. This recipe can be done with 5 minutes of hands-on prep time and yields the same amount as a 14 oz store-bought condensed milk can.
  • Quality ingredients: Enjoy the rich, creamy flavor of homemade condensed milk, free from artificial additives – one of the many benefits of cooking from scratch.
  • Cost-effective: Similar to my Instant Pot yogurt, making your own condensed milk can save you money compared to store-bought options.

Ingredients and substitutions

Ingredients laid out to make condensed milk.
  • Milk – This recipe uses whole milk and whole milk powder for a rich and creamy condensed milk. I don’t recommend using skim milk products if you’re after a thick and creamy consistency.
  • Butter – The butter dissolves in the hot milk and gives it extra richness and helps thicken it once cooled. I use lightly salted butter. Simply add a smidgen of salt if you’re using unsalted butter.
  • Sugar – Powdered sugar dissolves easily and sweetens the milk. You might be able to use natural sweeteners such as stevia or monkfruit powder instead.
  • Vanilla – I use vanilla extract or homemade vanilla syrup to add flavor to the milk but you can omit it as well.

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

Variations

Unsweetened: Simply omit the sugar and vanilla to make unsweetened condensed milk which you can use in savory dishes.

Spiced condensed milk: Add 1/2 tsp of chai spice mix or winter spice mix to make spiced hot drinks and dessert easily.

Step 1: Starting with the hot milk, add all ingredients to a large stand-up blender. Add the lid but leave the smaller insert off for the steam to escape.

Step 2: Place a paper towel above the gap to prevent any splashes. Blend until smooth. Scraping down the sides with a spatula if needed, before blending again.

Popular condensed milk recipes

Desserts: Use condensed milk in ice cream such as my no-churn boysenberry ice cream or black forest ice cream. Fudge and caramel sauce are other popular recipes that use sweetened condensed milk.

Hot drinks: Add a spoonful of condensed milk to your coffee instead of a creamer or thicken your homemade hot cacao drink or hot vanilla drink.

Savory dishes: Use unsweetened condensed milk in Indian curries, Thai, or Filipino dishes.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 tbsp butter unsalted
  • 1 1/2 cups milk powder full-fat
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract optional

Instructions

  • Heat the milk in a small saucepan or in the microwave. Make sure it's not boiling (Note 1).
  • Add all ingredients to a high-speed blender. Make sure the blender has a vent or opening to allow steam to escape (Note 2).
3/4 cup whole milk, 1 tbsp butter, 1 1/2 cups milk powder, 1/2 cup powdered sugar, 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Blend on high for 1-2 minutes until all ingredients are well combined. Scrape down the sides if needed and blend again.
  • Add the blended condensed milk to a lidded jar and store it in the fridge until fully cooled for about 1-2 hours (Note 3) or until you're ready to use it (Note 4). The mixture will set further as it cools down.

Notes

Note 1 – Hot milk is key: Using hot milk helps the ingredients dissolve more easily and creates a smoother texture.
Note 2 – Hot liquids in blenders: Make sure the blender isn’t fully sealed so the excess steam can vent. I don’t recommend using a Nutri Bullet type of blender.
Note 3 – In a hurry? Cool down the homemade condensed milk in the freezer or an ice bath.
Note 4 – Store properly: Refrigerate the condensed milk to ensure freshness and prevent spoilage.
